Finding and listening to some wonderful music, some in areas that I might not normally listen to, but in this weird, rewired 2020 you gotta open up your horizons some way!
Take Twisted Pine’s Right Now album which throws us bluegrass (newgrass), pop, funk, all combined (think Punch Brothers, Crooked Still) with incredible musicianship (fiddle of Kathleen Park, bass of Chris Satori, flute of Anh Phung, mandolin of Dan Bui ) lead and harmony vocals!
This music just makes you feel good and tap your feet, some of it is well scripted whilst other parts seem like all players are having a fine old jam as not all songs feature vocals!
Mike Polizze ( Purling Hiss) is another newie to me but when I saw mention of Kurt Vile guesting and War On Drugs, Steve Gunn, Nick Drake influences, I had to give his new solo debut album Long Lost Solace Find a go!
Quite a laid back album, mostly acoustic, and sounds sometimes if Polizze is singing to himself (daydreaming?), but a lovely multi-layered recording that has its time and place…..not your party album, but one for drifting out to in the sun or late at night after a few beers!!
Number 3 this week is back in time with Bobby Rush, Rawer Than Raw the latest album from this “King Of The Chitlin Circuit” as he brings acoustic guitar, harmonica, hands and feet for percussion, in a back to basics collection of songs from Skip James, Howlin Wolf, Elmore James, Muddy Waters and some originals.
Now 86 years old, Bobby Rush gives us a wonderful history lesson of blues music inspired by the Mississippi region, and of artists that he either met or knew of, all performed with great feel and reverence.
An excellent album for blues beginners and those that have always loved this genre….go on try "Smokestack Lightning" (a Howlin' Wolf song) and "Garbage Man" (this is an original live recording from Americanafest 2019). Go Bobby!
Good listening folks!
