Ladi6 is a name synonymous with the NZ festival scene, and it’s no wonder as her unique blend of Hip Hop, neo soul, funk, R&B and reggae have lead to multiple awards and critical acclaim.
Kirikiriroa natives Katchafire have become a global roots reggae phenomenon. The all Māori reggae band bring their pure classic sound to music lovers worldwide delivering one of the most authentic Reggae shows around today. With their previous four successful studio albums, multiple awards and platinum sales, Katchafire will be taking the 7pm slot to be your sundown soundtrack come December 31st.
Tom Scott moves Avantdale Bowling Club from the rehearsal room to the Wondergarden stage. “This record has so much potential for interpretation – it was made to be played live”. The band comprises some of the country’s finest jazz musicians in Julien Dyne (Drums), Tonga Vaea (Keys and Trumpet), Ben Turua (Bass) and JY Lee (Sax). This is a rare live opportunity to hear the album that has been celebrated by critics and music-lovers alike (Scott’s only other Auckland performance this year sold out in 48 hours).
Matthew Young emerged onto Soundcloud shrouded in mystique, as he began to seep his future-sexed alt-B tracks across the internet, building into his first major project titled ‘DIVE’, released mid-2015. His ear for melody and forward thinking production have led to sold out shows in NZ and AUS, supporting Lorde, millions of Spotify streams, and a follow up ‘Fruit’ EP this year, which was the result of “the most fruitless season of my life” according to Young. This set marks only the third opportunity fans have had to witness Young’s talents, and is most certainly one not to miss this NYE.
Another act caught early by Lorde is the enigmatic HIGH HØØPS AKA Jordan Arts, who’s debut album Seasons On Planet Earth d ropped just weeks ago. The multimode artist endeavours to shake modern sonic atmospheres centred in groove and ambience into nostalgic retro worlds with a refreshing spin. Like a reconnaissance mission to a parallel universe. Bobbing and weaving somewhere between experimental pop and ghettoblaster r&b music, the vocalist, producer and multi-instrumentalist has shared stages with iconic producers such as Kaytranada, MNDSGN, Harvey Sutherland & Bermuda. We cannot wait to see what Arts brings to the Wondergarden stage.
Julien Dyne will be bringing his eclectic selections to Wondergarden’s stage this New Years. Dyne is a multi-talent drummer, producer, DJ and visual artist, born 1979 in Montreal Canada. A mainstay in some of New Zealand’s most recognisable live and studio bands, Dyne works with Ladi6, Opensouls, Fat Freddy’s Drop, @peace, Avantdale Bowling Club, Lord Echo, She’s So Rad and Nathan Haines to name a few. Dyne’s soon to be released solo album ‘Teal’ see him switching gears towards a more uptempo, afro inspired dancefloor sound with emphasis on live drums and arpeggiated synthesizers.
Wondergarden have also announced a second zone entitled A Silo Called Success, which promises an eclectic dance party inside the 6 Silos on site. Hosted by A Label Called Success, the space will be headlined by Australian dance duo KLLO; feature a set from High Høøps; and will be further soundtracked by Auckland’s resident disco and boogie don Frank Booker, the house and techno selections of promoter/DJ/radio host Katherine “K2K” Anderson, the hypnotic melodies and dreamy synth-lines of Peach Milk, and finally dancefloor disciples Hugo Jay and Aw B, who are both very active in the local dance scene, and have an impressive array of shows & releases under their belts respectively.
