Wow! We are out of Lockdown, what to do first??? Same as we must always do….bend an ear to some wonderful music that is always pouring through…like…
1) This old codger Terry Allen, for over 50 years he has been a painter, sculptor and conceptual artist (has work in New York’s MOMA collection), playwright, and singer-songwriter, possibly one of the best Texas has produced ( the 1970’s Juarez and the fabulous Lubbock (On Everything)), has his latest Just Like Moby Dick available now.
Credited to Terry Allen & The Panhandle Mystery Band (a 12 piece), the now 76 year old has given us something really, really special. Check Out Abandonitis and Sailin On Through.
2) I first came across Frazey Ford as a member of Canadian band The Be Good Tanyas, a wonderful blend of Bluegrass, Folk, Blues…then kind of lost track of her but now U Kin B The Sun appears! This is Frazey Ford’s third solo album and is a wonderful mix of Southern Soul and Folk…brilliant vocals are combined with a cracker band that does not over play leaving lots of space.
Ford has had a lot of pain in her life but pulls it all together here...listen to the title track.
3) Okay so while we have a soul feel going, here’s a new band to me The Jay Vons, from New York with their debut album The Word. Fun, authentic sounding, rooted in soul but other influences such as 1960’s classic pop, the members have lots of experience in other bands.
So the musicianship and vocals are bloody good, from ballads to real pacey tracks, and if this is their first album, I’m in!
Here’s Keep On Moving and title track The Word to whet the appetite
