Here we are mid January, been doing lots of reading, drinking, eating, listening so let’s see what I’ve found whilst out and about!
Carry Out Or Delivery is 21 year old Ben Levin’s 3rd album of blues, that very much focusses on this young man’s mastery of blues piano and his smoky vocal style.
Mentored by harmonica player Bob Corritore and guitarist Bob Margolin, we are presented with 8 originals and 4 covers from the likes of Frank Frost and Floyd Dixon.
Ben Levin also shows us his expertise on Hammond B3 and Wurlitzer along with a tight 3 piece band featuring his Dad Aron Levin on guitar; this album is wonderful in its presentation of a really gifted young artist that knows his stuff!
Master blues guitarist Kirk Fletcher released his first album in 1999 and has recorded with other artists such as Kim Wilson, Janiva Magness and James Harman and has played in leading bands The Mannish Boys and The Fabulous Thunderbirds.
With his latest solo release My Blues Pathway we are given full confirmation of his all round ability as a blues singer/songwriter/guitarist/band leader…..6 originals and 4 great covers, with a band of top tier musicians; “Life Gave Me A Dirty Deal” features Charlie Musselwhite on harmonica!
The outstanding guitar playing and strong confident vocals are shown over a range of authentic blues styles, making this album number 5 in English Mojo magazine’s 2020 top 10 Blues albums!
Canadian singer/songwriter/guitarist Terra Lightfoot's latest album Consider The Speed is full of her rock, soul and blues songs recorded in Memphis…..and it is a wonderful discovery!
Whilst there is certainly familiarity in her sound, let’s call the genre Americana, there are lots of raging Telecaster guitar and vocals amongst her original stories of lost love and some bitterness to overcome any clichés.
With a 2018 Canadian Polaris Music Prize and Juno nominations for her previous album New Mistakes, Terra Lightfoot is a new artist for me, she toured Australia in 2019, but one that is definitely on my radar!
Here’s title track and “Paper Thin Walls”
Lay it on….
