NZSO’s Bach in Lockdown

The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra continues it’s weekly free streamed performances including a new six-part Bach series premiering Wednesday 29 April. 

Bach Sei Solo features NZSO string players performing their favourite movements from one of Johann Sebastian Bach’s solo partitas, sonatas or suites and sharing their thoughts on what the music means to them.  This series is part of three streaming premiers by the NZSO this week, with support from performing partner RNZ Concert.

Curated by Hamish McKeich, Ascent is part of an exciting, fast-paced series of concerts in which each piece of music is no longer than three minutes, creating a rapid-fire experience. Included in the programme is the work Ascent by NZ composer Gareth Farr. Renowned German-Canadian cellist Johannes Moser is joined by NZSO Section Principal Cello Andrew Joyce, and NZSO cellists Ken Ichinose and Rowan Prior to perform this mesmerising work.   Click to stream

NZSO in association with Ryman Healthcare presents the third of its Discovering Beethoven series.  This is part of Beethoven’s 250th birthday celebrations this year.  Curator of this series is the Concertmaster Vesa-Matti Leppänen and the programme will include a selection of the great composer’s chamber works. While the NZSO has not been able to perform live concerts due to COVID-19 restrictions, the national orchestra has been busy presenting free online performances to New Zealanders. It has also included the weekly Play Our Part series with NZSO players and guests performing from their homes, a series of education videos called Music Room, and previously filmed NZSO concert performances. All performances can be viewed at and Music Room videos at via smart TV, mobile phone, tablet or computer.

Written By: Clare Martin Clare has performed as an opera, recital and oratorio artist in UK most notably the Queen Elizabeth Hall, South Bank, London. In NZ she has performed with NZ Opera and with the NZ Symphony Orchestra but more recently she has moved into a wider range of contemporary genres including jazz and even Leonard Cohen. Since 2008 Clare has been teaching from her own music studio working with professional and beginner singers. In 2017 she was a mentor on TVNZ’s The Naked Choir working with a cappella choirs and she currently coaches barbershop and a woman’s ensemble.
